Benefits Enrollment

The benefits staff welcomes you to Washington University! If you are a new postdoctoral appointee, your department should schedule your attendance at a Postdoctoral Appointee Orientation session, typically held the third Tuesday of each month, which will provide you an overview of benefits applicable to postdoctoral research appointees.

You have 31 days following your appointment start date to enroll in certain benefit plans. Benefit-eligible postdoctoral appointees may enroll in benefits online or by completing paper enrollment forms (links provided below). Beyond your first 31 days, enrollment is restricted to the annual Open Enrollment period in November or within 31 days following a qualified family status change (62 days for the birth or adoption of a child), and may require completion of a statement of health form, depending on the plan.eBenefits Online Enrollment »

If you prefer not to enroll online, you may complete the applicable benefit enrollment forms below and submit them to the Benefits Office (Box 8002 or Fax 362-2500) by no later than 31 days following your appointment start date.

Your Benefit Plan Choices

Health/Dental/Prescription Drugs/Vision Insurance
Enroll within 31 days of appointment start date or during Open Enrollment.

A choice of four medical plans is available to postdoctoral appointees (view Health Plan Comparison):

  • One United HealthCare Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan
  • One United HealthCare Point of Service (POS) plan
  • Two Blue Cross Blue Shield Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan options

Benefits for dental, prescription drugs, and vision are automatically included when you enroll in any of the university’s four medical plans. The coverage under the dental, prescription drug, and vision plans are the same no matter which health plan you choose.

Term Life and Accident Insurance
Enroll within 31 days of appointment start date or at any time thereafter with the submission of a Statement of Health form.

The university provides postdoctoral appointees with free term life insurance coverage equal to one time annual base salary/stipend and free accident insurance coverage equal to four times annual base salary/stipend.

Additional Coverage. Postdoctoral appointees may also purchase optional term life insurance coverage in increments of one time to four times their annual base salary/stipend at affordable group rates through MetLife. 

Optional Dependent Coverage. In addition, postdoctoral appointees may purchase optional term life insurance coverage for their spouse or domestic partner, and for their dependent children (age restrictions apply). 

Premiums for optional postdoc or dependent coverage are paid by the appointee on an after-tax basis through payroll deduction.

403(b) Retirement Savings
Enroll at any time.

Postdoctoral research associates may immediately contribute to the university’s defined contribution 403(b) Retirement Savings Plan. Contribution elections are a percentage of annual base salary, with a minimum of 1% to the maximum dollar limit established by the IRS.  There is no university contribution to the plan for postdoctoral research associates.
