 Washington University offers a variety of programs to help faculty and staff balance the demands of their work with commitments at home.

Lactation Rooms

There are currently 30 lactation spaces across the medical campus. Each of the locations provides a private space where nursing mothers are welcome to pump. Rooms are equipped with appropriate signage, a comfortable chair, a small table and an electrical outlet. Back-up Care Advantage Program

The Back-Up Care Advantage Program provides back-up care for eligible individuals when they need to be at work and their regular child or elder/adult care is unavailable. More information is available on the university human resources website.

Employee Assistance Program

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides confidential, professional assistance to benefits-eligible University employees and their family members to help resolve problems affecting their personal life or job performance. Child Development Center

Sponsored by St. Louis Children’s Hospital, the services of the Child Development Center are offered to Washington University Medical School employees. They offer enrichment programs for infants through kindergarten age children. The Center is located at 321 S. Newstead (phone 314-454-4700) and at 4353 Clayton Avenue (phone 314-362-0777). Hours for both locations are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Nursery School

The Washington University Nursery School was founded in 1947 as a cooperative venture of faculty and Washington University in St. Louis. The primary purpose of the nursery school is to provide the highest quality preschool program for children 2 years and 7 months to 5 years of age. Today about 70 percent of the children are from families of Washington University in St. Louis faculty, staff and students and the remaining are from families in the community.

University City Children’s Center

Washington University in St. Louis has long enjoyed an affiliation with the University City Children’s Center (UCCC). Located at 6646 Vernon Avenue in University City, UCCC is a nonprofit, United Way-supported agency committed to providing innovative quality education to, and a nurturing environment for, a racially, culturally, socioeconomically and developmentally diverse population of children between six weeks and six years of age, while also providing supportive services to families.
